Microchipping

If your pet gets lost, your chances of being reunited with them are much higher if they are microchipped.

Microchipping Saves Lives

Being separated from your dog or cat is likely one of your worst fears. As a responsible pet parent, you do everything you can to prevent your furry friend from escaping your yard or home. Unfortunately, no one is immune to disaster. No matter how careful you are or how well your pet is trained, it only takes seconds for a frightened animal to dart out a door or for an overly excited dog to jump a fence. If this ever happens, your chances of being reunited with your pet are much higher if they are microchipped. At Whitestone Veterinary Care, we perform microchipping for pets in Whitestone, College Point, Bayside, and the surrounding areas, and we recommend this simple procedure for nearly all of our patients.

How It Works

Microchipping only takes a few seconds, and there’s no need for anesthesia. The chip — which is roughly the same size as a grain of rice — is injected below the skin between the shoulder blades using a syringe. The process feels similar to a vaccination, and it’s over before many pets even know anything is happening. Your pet can immediately resume their normal activities after leaving our office.

Pet microchips provide a form of permanent identification. They do not have tracking capabilities. Instead, each chip has an identification number used to create an online account containing your contact information. When lost pets are scanned, the scanner brings up the chip’s ID number. This number is then used to look up the owner’s contact information. If your microchipped pet is ever brought into a shelter or animal hospital, someone will reach out to you as long as the info in your account is up to date.
