Dental Care

Dental disease is the most common health issue amongst pets. Thus, regular dental care is an essential part of keeping your pet healthy. We offer dental exams with every regular wellness visit. We also recommend you regularly help your pet keep their teeth healthy whether it be through manually brushing their teeth or through specific dental chews.

We offer routine dental procedures, such as dental cleanings and extractions. Our professional dental cleanings include:

  • Thorough tooth examination to check for mobility and fractures
  • A complete ultrasonic scaling to remove plaque and tartar
  • Polishing with a special paste to smooth the tooth enamel
  • X-rays to examine the teeth, roots and bones

Our routine dental cleanings are done while your pet is under anesthesia so we will perform simple blood tests prior to the cleaning to confirm that your pet is a good candidate for anesthesia. Our technicians will monitor your pet’s vitals throughout the entire procedure as well to ensure that there are no complications.

At-Home Dental Care

To hinder the build-up of tartar and plaque and help your pet maintain a healthy mouth, we highly recommend regular at-home dental care. Brushing your pet’s teeth every day or every other day can help to greatly reduce the build of bacteria that can progress to periodontitis. Periodontitis is characterized by pockets of chronic infection, oral pain, and severe infections that when left untreated, will eventually loosen and destroy the teeth with a potential for bone loss. Once infections start under the gum line there is the potential for them to spread to the liver, kidneys, and heart, which can cause serious medical problems.

Therefore, it is really very important that you do not neglect your pet’s mouth. If your pet will not tolerate teeth brushing then dental chews are a viable alternative. Please talk to one of our veterinarians to learn more about at-home dental care.
