Dr. Douglas Kent Wyler

Medical Director

Dr. Douglas Wyler has been fascinated by puzzles for as long as he can remember. When he was introduced to veterinary medicine by his older brother—who works as a veterinarian himself—Dr. Wyler knew that animal care was the perfect challenge for him. Not only would he get to better the lives of pets, he would be able to use his problem-solving skills to bring comfort to their owners! Now, Dr. Wyler has been serving the community as the Medical Director of the Whitestone Veterinary Care and Animal Medical Hospital for nearly 40 years.

A native of Brooklyn, Dr. Wyler completed his Bachelor’s degree in biological sciences at Cornell University’s College of Agriculture and Life Science, then decided to follow his brother to Italy for veterinary school. Dr. Wyler attended the oldest veterinary school in the Western world, the Universita’ degli Studi di Bologna, where he learned not only veterinary medicine but four languages, fascinating history, an entirely new culture, and much more!

After graduating with his veterinary degree, Dr. Wyler returned to New York and practiced in Brooklyn while obtaining additional training at Manhattan’s Animal Medical Center. In 1977, he opened the Animal Medical Hospital for business and has been serving the pet owners of the area ever since.

Dr. Wyler and his wife, Irma, have three grown children who were raised in Rockville Centre. They share their lives with Charlie, an elderly miniature long-haired Dachshund; Delilah the cat, who is very affectionate when she wants to be; and Alex, a Quaker Parrot who has never heard the adage “don’t bite the hand that feeds you.”

When he has a spare moment between family life and his duties here at the clinic, Dr. Wyler enjoys music and particularly loves Brazilian jazz and Latin salsa. He and his wife try to catch as many live performances as they can—those rhythms just don’t let them sit still!

Dr. Jun Yu

Associate Veterinarian

Although none of her family members had any background in the veterinary world, Dr. Jun Yu was born with an innate desire to help the earth’s creatures. She’s always known that a career in the veterinary profession was her true calling! Her passion never wavered, and now Dr. Yu betters the lives of pets on a daily basis as an Associate Veterinarian with Whitestone Veterinary Care and the Animal Medical Hospital.

Dr. Yu was born in China but grew up in Bayside, Queens, New York with her parents. After earning her undergraduate degree at Cornell University, Dr. Yu was accepted to Purdue University’s College of Veterinary Medicine to earn her Doctorate. She then practiced in Minnesota for three years after graduation before returning to her home in Bayside.

At home, Dr. Yu has two pets of her own: Gogo is a socially awkward Border collie mix, and Phenakite is a loveable White Syrian hamster. When she isn’t tending to the needs of pets here at the hospital or enjoying the company of her own animal companions, Dr. Yu likes practicing archery and martial arts, painting, and drawing. She’s designed T-shirts for clubs in her high school, college, and veterinary school, and one of her watercolor paintings is even hanging at Purdue!

Dr. Jessica Chandler

Associate Veterinarian

Before devoting herself to veterinary medicine, Dr. Jessica Chandler studied violin at the Julliard School of Music in Manhattan. During her coursework, she started volunteering at the local ASPCA to satisfy her other lifelong passion: animals. It didn’t take long for Dr. Chandler to come to a decision. A career in veterinary medicine was the future that she wanted for herself!

Dr. Chandler grew up in North Bellmore, Long Island, New York with her parents and sister. She started her animal-care journey by volunteering as an assistant at the ASPCA, then enrolled in Columbia University’s pre-med program to complete her prerequisite coursework for veterinary school. Dr. Chandler also volunteered at various Long Island veterinary clinics and a wildlife rehabilitation facility during this time.

Dr. Chandler was accepted into her dream school, Cornell University’s College of Veterinary Medicine, to complete her Doctorate. She joined the team here at Whitestone Veterinary Care and at the Animal Medical Hospital after graduation, and is thrilled to now work in the clinic that her family has taken their own pets to for many years.

As a veterinarian, Dr. Chandler enjoys internal medicine, pain management, and nutrition. She’s also partial to feline medicine and enjoys navigating the unique intricacies of cats.

In her time away from work, Dr. Chandler is still an avid violinist and even teaches students ranging in age from seven to 15 one day a week. She also likes singing, attending Broadway musicals, reading, cooking and trying out new recipes, and spending time with her own pets at home. Dr. Chandler has three loveable cats: Sheba, a grey tabby; an orange tabby named Peaches; and Patches, Peaches’ sibling.
